I usually take my own pictures of my subjects. I have in mind what I would like to do, and I find it or set it up and photograph it. This is an exception.
The perspective of this piece is from the inside of a spring, underwater, looking up to the sunlight.
Since I don’t have an underwater camera (and I can't see underwater without my glasses anyway), I used composites of other photos for perspective and color.
I spent eight years in Colorado, and I’ve traveled to Europe, Japan and Australia. I’ve tried to explain a freshwater Florida spring to people in all these places, and I just don’t have the words.
On the December Art Walk when I was the featured artist, an art patron commented to me that this image reminded him of his struggle through alcoholism; that it gave him hope. Certainly, this was not at all my intention for painting this, but I do love that this image is ambiguous enough to have diverse meanings for different people, yet the meanings still contain hope and beauty.
