Portraits and Figures
I think still lifes and landscapes are beautiful, of course, but it's people that make art. People are what compels a viewer to enjoy a painting. I've been an observer of people for a long time. Not just someone who people-watches, but I see people's stories. That one moment when someone shows their story is a moment of light. And all of us show our stories to others if others care to see. That moment, when all that is to be seen of someone is light reflected, as if it emanates from the skin, teeth, hair, or clothes.
I see these moments in so many people. I wish I had time to paint them all. When a viewer sees a painting of mine, I want them to see that light and I want the subject's story, if only for a moment, to become clear.
