Each of these paintings is some form of practice. I hadn’t done too many still lifes before this one.

This is my living room. I set it up with the objects that have the best colors, in the space that contrasted the best light.

I don’t play the guitar. It’s not mine, but Charley Johnson (the guitar’s name – I bought it for my partner for her birthday the same day Hurricane Charley hit) and the unnamed banjo are beautiful works of art in themselves. I didn’t take to playing the banjo as well as I took to art, unfortunately.

I had wanted to work with these colors and objects for a while, but I got the real motivation to do this immediately after an Art Walk when an art patron looked at all of my work and criticized each piece with unnecessary harshness. I was standing behind him, and I don’t think he knew – or cared, for that matter.

I got angry. Then I did this.

Update:

In December, St Augustine musician and friend of the Energy Lab, Elizabeth Roth was sideswiped while traveling home from a gig. She was very seriously injured. When the music community in Northeast Florida heard of it, they decided to band together and record a double set CD for Elizabeth, the proceeds of which will go to her recovery as a musician, as all of her equipment, instruments and her PA system was lost in the crash. All the contributors are local musicians. I was honored to be asked to provide the cover art for the CD, in the form of this painting.
